About the Item

This is a beautiful 14k gold ring that is part of our Signature Collection. There is a 14k split shank that has been attached to a Victorian era micro mosaic bird set in a tablet of onyx and surrounded by a hand engraved 14k gold border. The onyx tablet measures 13mm by 15mm and the ring is a size 5 1/2. The bird is made using a painstaking technique that involves creating an image out of small pieces of opaque enamel glass called tesserae. The tiny mosaics were first developed in the second half of the 18th century by the Vatican Mosaic Workshop. By the 19th century, numerous independent studios devoted to the production of these small keepsakes were established to meet travelers’ demands for souvenirs. The split shank ring was custom made for the gold framed micro mosaic. There is a collection of these rings with various subject matter available on Kirsten's Corner. Weighs 3.6

18K Gold Art Deco Signet Ring with Intaglio of Swallows
Located in Venice, CA
This poetic and simple signet ring has the intaglio of a swallow with wings spread mid-flight. The image of a swallow is rich with symbolism, as swallows are known to return to their nesting sights each year. Swallows also played a role in maritime tradition, as sailors would know they were close to land when they spotted a swallow flying above. Swallows came to represent the safe return from a long voyage, and people would give swallow jewelry...
