About the Item
This mid-century Amethyst and gold ring is built around a medium purple step-cut amethyst, a 14 × 12 mm stone, estimated 12 carat weight, with strong saturation and clear architectural lines. It is set in high-karat yellow metal that tests around 22ct, which explains the rich colour and the softer, more malleable look of the metalwork. Overall weight of ring including the amethyst is 7.1 grams. The mount is vintage: tall, openwork shoulders, claw setting, and a basket that gives the stone height and presence without drowning it in metal. At finger size R, it’s compact but carries plenty of visual impact, helped by its solid weight. Amethyst has a long track record in jewellery, especially in high-karat gold. Before large Brazilian deposits were found in the 19th century, amethyst was considered a precious stone on par with emerald and ruby. It stayed popular through the Victorian period, where purple and gold were a favourite pairing, and saw another wave of use in mid-century pieces when jewellers leaned back into bold colour and clean, geometric cuts. The step cut used here is a classic choice—less about sparkle, more about depth and clarity, which suits the stone’s natural colour.
This is a strong example of a high-gold karat amethyst solitaire: simple, confident design, a punchy stone, and the glow you only get from gold that’s close to pure.
