About the Item
This remarkable 14k rose gold agate cameo ring features the portrait of a gentleman, depicted in profile wearing a hat and looking off into the distance. The agate is dark reddish brown, a nice compliment to the rose gold that the stone is set into. The portrait has very high relief and is rendered in impressive detail—the man’s hair, beard, clothing, and facial expression are all intricately carved into the stone. The agate is prong set and the cameo rests elevated on the finger. The 14k rose gold band has an ornate motif reminiscent of corinthian columns. For a nice added touch, the open back of the ring allows for light to accentuate the deep reds found in the stone.
Circa the 1900’s, it was tradition to engrave portraits of important figures onto jewelry during this era, most commonly Greek figures. Perhaps this was a lady’s ring, and the portrait is of someone important in her life. No matter what the story behind this ring might be, it has been carved with great care and skill.
The oval agate measures 14 x 9.6 x 4 mm, and the centerpiece on the band is approximately 1/2”. The ring weighs 4 grams. It is unmarked but tests as 14k.
Ring size 4.5; the repeating pattern along the band fades at the bottom of the band, making it easy to resize the ring.
