About the Item

A puppy is wrapped in a golden sash on the back of a kneeling woman on this Shakudo ring c. 1870. It appears that the woman is uncovering a bone from the earth. The sash swirls through the ring like a dance. The reverse of the turning ring is a gold oval. Wearable as is, he oval has light scratches that can be polished out. This is indeed an unusual subject for a Shakudo piece. Although nature is always the subject in Japanese art, I have not seen a dog before that is not a foo dog or shi shi dog.. At first I thought it must be a child but with close study, the paws and head prove it is a little pet dog. Shakudo is the art of utilizing mixed metals such as copper, silver and gold and creating works of art. It is an alloy of approximately 96 percent copper and 4 percent gold and when patinated turns a fine gray/black. Highly trained Japanese artisans used their skills in the art of Shakudo, to adorn the swords of the Samurai warriors. In 1877, an edict was passed by the Japanese government forbidding the use of weapons, ending the culture of the Samurai.. The artists created jewelry as a means to make their skill survive artistically and economically.. They refashioned pieces of the swords to create jewelry. The art is no longer made. The size is 9 1/2. A master jeweler can make the ring smaller. I prefer that you do this so that the jeweler can measure you for perfect fit. Glorious can do the job if you prefer. Height of plaque is 1 1/8th inches. Width is 5/8 of an inch. Weight is 15.9 grams. Gold shank is 10Kt.
