About the Item
The cameo depicts four conjoined heads that take the name of gryllos, which means the union of two or more heads of human and animal origin, often with mythological associations and with a protective function. In this case, the cameo, datable around the eighteenth century, represents a ram – a symbol of strength and heroism, a satyr – symbol of lascivious and Apollonian pleasures and, finally, a young man and an old man, symbolic representation of time passing.
