About the Item
Sold as a lot the following:
1. Ancient Denarius, Coin of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius, mounted in a 22K hand hammered, hand crafted large and stately gold ring by Fairchild
Co. The authentic Roman Denarius, approximately 17 mm., is in fine condition with fine relief, of the Diademed head of Pietas facing right before a stork. On the verso is an elephant walking left, wearing a bell around its neck. The elephant was a family symbol referring to Lucius Caecilius Metellus' victory at Panormus in 251 BC, and likely to the overall military prowess of the family.
A Roman with the virtue of Pietas did not leave his religious duties at the door of the temple, but carried them with him everywhere, following the will of the gods in his business transactions and everyday life. Pietas held great importance in the realm of international relations and diplomacy.
This ring is in excellent condition, a size 7.50 and can be resized.
