About the Item
An ancient gold ring, with Sri inscription, in 22 karat yellow gold.
This unique, unusual ring is steeped in history. Hailing from the 9th or 10th Century, this ancient piece of jewellery has been inscribed with a Sri or Shri motif. The Sri or Shri motif is related to the Hindu goddess of the same name, who is the goddess of rice, fertility, good fortune, and prosperity. Symbols like the lotus flower, an earthen pot containing the water of life, and a conch shell were often associated with the Goddess Sri. The ring is modelled with a quatrefoil shaped head, adorned with an inscription, and sporting beaded shoulders. The band of the ring is plain, and is no longer perfectly round in shape. The ring is in good, ancient condition, with some scratches and wear to the gold, but overall, it is in impressive condition for an item up to 1,200 years old. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
There are very similar rings held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession numbers 1998.544.399 and 1998.544.398.
The head of the ring measures 9.7mm high, and 9.9mm wide. The band measures 1mm wide at the back, at the narrowest point.
