Antique 18K Gold Intaglio Dog Ring in Green Chalcedony

About the Item

For my fellow dog lovers, I offer one of several special antique dog rings I've just found - this one a Victorian carved intaglio chalcedony dog 18K gold signet ring. While the stone shows some superficial wear (which could be re-polished) the charming dog's profile remains crisp and lovely. - Please view all photos and review the details, as the stone's scratches/wear are not visible in all views and angles. I've shown the stone in different lighting and different angles, to give you a sense of how it sometimes shows the wear and sometimes it's much less apparent. - The open backed bezel-set chalcedony is a rich, deep green color with nice translucency and glow. (It may have been dyed long ago to enhance the beautiful color) Measuring approximately 14 x 11.5 mm (just over 1/2 an inch x 7/16 of an inch), the chalcedony has a cushiony rectangular shape with a flat tablet front and a polished, lightly domed reverse. As mentioned above, there is definitely superficial scratching to the top of the stone, though the scratches don't appear to be deep or interfere directly with the dog; the edges of the stone also show some wear. I've left the stone in its original condition as I know some people prefer signs of age and to keep things as original as possible, but the stone could be re-polished if that is your preference. (I can have that done or recommend someone I trust. Since there is some wear to the gold, it's possible the setting will need a little work if the stone is removed for polishing.) I love the proud stance of the dog, as well as the style of carving. Rich and buttery, the 18K gold remains in good antique condition, with some expected wear and a hint of pleasing patina. I believe the ring was re-shanked long ago, likely to size the ring down. It was done carefully, and it means the band is still nice and substantial. No hallmarks remain, but as I found the ring in England I suspect there were probably English hallmarks before the ring was sized. Very suitable for either a man or a woman, and comfortable on the hand, the face of the ring measures approximately 17.5 x 15.15 mm including the upper shoulders. The rise off the finger is approximately 3.5 mm, while the back of the band measures approximately 3.06 mm. Currently the ring is a size 9 on my mandrel but fits me a bit more generously. It may be sized up or down within reason. A charming old piece ready to be loved in a new home. Please see my other antique dog/animal themed pieces if you are so inclined.

Condition:
Additions or alterations made to the original: I believe the ring was carefully reshanked at some time in the past; done well - resulting in a nicely substantial band. Wear consistent with age and use. The carved intaglio Dog remains beautifully crisp, but there is scratching/wear to the background and edges of the stone that could be re-polished, if desired.
