Fine Art Deco period 18K white gold, diamond, carved green onyx scarab amulet ring
Circa 1920
This beautiful ring features a vibrant, finely carved emerald green onyx scarab surrounded by twelve Old Mine cut diamonds in an attractive 18K white gold setting.
Scarab rings have been worn as amulets for over 4000 years, since the Egyptian Middle Kingdom period, with the scarab representing the God Ra. The discovery of Tutankhamun's Tomb by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon in 1922 created a renewed interest in ancient Egyptian objects, jewels in particular, and this lovely ring dates from the Art Deco period when this interest was at its height. Fine jewelers, most notably Cartier, created Egyptian inspired jewels often using carved black and green onyx.
