About the Item
We really love hard stone cameo rings and this is perhaps the nicest we have had to date. The ring mount is crafted from 18 karat yellow and rose gold and has been rub over set with a hard stone cameo which is likely 18th or 19th century in origin. The cameo depicts a classical man in profile, likely a Roman, facing left, however we have been unable to identify the sitter. Classical cameos and intaglios in profile like this often depict Roman emperors like Julius Caesar or Hadrian, however it can be hard to attribute profiles to a particular person. It is possible that this particular ring started life as a small brooch pin and has been converted to a ring later, however this does not detract from the piece as it has been beautifully crafted regardless. It should be noted that there is some crazing to the hard stone, mainly visible from the back, which is most likely natural inclusions as opposed to later damage. There are some very minor losses to the white profile sections of the cameo, commensurate with age and use. A really lovely ring which would be a striking feature for a lady to wear, or a nice piece for an antiquarian gentleman to sport.
