Beautiful classical ancient Egyptian style Art Deco period 14K yellow gold Tassie intaglio ring depicting a dancing faun and goat flanked by three stylized gold palm fronds at the shoulders. The geometric rendering of the palm frond motif is one of the key elements of the Egyptian Revival style popular during the Art Deco era after the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb in 1922.
James Tassie (1735-1799) was a Scottish gem engraver and glyphtographer who perfected a very high standard of creating beautifully detailed opaque glass intaglios. His pieces are sought after by intaglio collectors and are in the permanent collections of the Brittish Museum, the V&A and numeous others worldwide. Glass intaglios originated in Ancient Rome and were often considered more valuable than stone intaglios because the process of creating them was more complex. "Tassie intaglio" is a term widely associated with post 18th century glass intaglios such as the one in this ring.
The dancing Faun and goat motif is linked to the cult of Dyonysius and is the personification of fertility and nature's life force. It embodies the pure, unadulterated joy of living.
