About the Item

Over the ages, populations have been fascinated with their coins as a form of value but also as an important statement of who they are. How kingdoms, empires and countries choose to design their coins, and leaders they decide to feature, says much about the population itself. Bulgari started using coins in its jewelry designs in the mid-1960s which represented a revival of an ancient Roman practice dating back to the 3rd century. Over the decades, coins featured in Monete creations have spanned a vast timeline and geography — from the Greek colonies of Magna Graecia and the reign of Alexander the Great to the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, the British Empire and even 20th century America. Coins offered Bulgari a way to celebrate their Roman beginnings and to play with creative ways of setting the coins as one would do with a gemstone. The Monete collections were meant to be worn all the time, not just for night. The vast number of beautiful creations using these coins is unfathomable and have become iconic emblems of Bulgari. Our Monete ring has a pleasing 18k yellow gold tapering band set with an ancient Greek coin dating to circa 325-275 BC featuring an extraordinarily clear and raised image of a man’s head. The other side of the coin, which is visible in the open setting, shows a dolphin, barley grain and a mussel shell. The ring itself is inscribed “CAMPANIA-PHISTELIA” one one semi-circle and “4ème siècle..”  on the other, both on the underside of the ring around the coin. 18k yellow gold Size 6.75 (can be resized up or down one full size) Weighs 12.8 grams Signed Bulgari with makers marks

He helped spearhead the mid-century British art jewelry movement and revitalize an industry decimated by World War II deprivations. Entirely self-taught, he rose to prominence in the 1960s, with his sculptural style capturing the free spirit of the times. In 1966 Grima's work came to the attention of the royal family after Lord Snowden purchased several pieces for Princess Margaret, most notably the Balmoral Lichen Brooch. That same year Prince Phillip gave the Queen a carved ruby and diamond brooch (known as the Ruby Venus Brooch...

BVLGARI Monete silver coin 18 karat gold ring Gross weight 19.9 gram, Measurement top: 18.7x19.9mm Engraved: REPVBBLICA 211 A.C 750 hallmark, Made in Italy mark and Signed Bvlgari Old money. From the Italian Icon – Bvlgari – not only an interesting look, but they also show cultural heritage and are interesting conversation pieces due to the incredible history behind each piece. We just Adore the style! It remains one of Bulgari’s most successful lines and is represented in the Bulgaris Heritage Collection and exhibited at their museum. Vintage Monete are passionately sought after and have in recent years had a surge in demand. Coins were not just forged as a means for trade transactions, but the images appearing on them could be symbols of power, sometimes symbolic talismans, and could manifest alliances between countries or families. Using antique coins in jewelry was not a new thing. The Roman nobility during Antiquity already did it, the style then had a revival during the 19th century, in particular with Roman jewelers like the Castellani. The Bulgari family knew well this story, as some of the 1800s jewels were collected by Nicola Bulgari, as much as antique coins. He indeed wanted to be an archaeologist, so his fascination for the past was strong. Bulgari’s Monete collection is flush with cultural currency. – “Reaching back through the centuries, Bulgari honors antiquity with Monete. Revering the artistic coins of yore. Bulgari contrasts them with the brilliance of its modern style.” Like a rare gem of inestimable historical value this ancient Roman coin has found a new life as precious jewel. The use of rare coins reflected Bulgari’s commitment to honoring history—any irregularities or signs of wear were preserved. Monete pieces date back to the 1960s, when Rome was the epicenter of glamour the so called “La Dolce Vita” era. During this time Bulgari began to make Monete a feature of the house’s narrative. Evoking Bulgari’s artisanal craftsmanship, avant-garde materials and unrivalled design as a stylish way to reference the family’s Greek and Roman roots. As rare as precious stones, ancient coins, sourced from antiquarians and auction houses, are referred to as “gemme nummarie” (nummary gems) and straddle centuries of history. Both Grace Kelly and Elisabeth Taylor are among the women who wore Bulgaris Monete jewelry.
