About the Item
Period: 6th – 7th century
Ring size: 12 ½
Weight: 3,95
The Byzantine ring from the 6th – 7th century is made of gold and is engraved with the Jewish Menorah surmounted by an inscription. In the Byzantine period there was a spread of rings with religious connotations, usually used to confirm one's belonging to a specific faith. Furthermore, the choice to engrave the Menorah is extremely votive, since the seven arms of which it is composed symbolize the seven days of Creation and allude to the light of knowledge and spiritual enlightenment to which man should aspire. Furthermore, the great goldsmith and engraving skill that the Byzantine manufacture of the 6th – 7th century managed to achieve, and the excellent conservation condition are really remarkable.

There is a gold ring similar in shape and composition of the image with the Virgin and Christ Child in the center flanked by two crosses (the left cross is also engraved slightly higher than the cross on the right side): a ring is in the Byzantine collection at Dumbarton Oaks, Washington D.C., That ring is stated to be a part of the late 6th century jewelry treasury. See Catalog of The Byzantine and Early Mediaeval Antiquities in The Dumbarton Oaks Collection, Volume 2, page 138, O, and plate XCVIII.
