Carved Green Chalcedony Cameo Ring in 18K Gold, Hallmarked Chester 1909

Being very partial to green gems, I was so pleased to find this antique hand carved green chalcedony cameo ring at a recent auction. In fantastic condition, it retains its original English hallmarks dating it to 1909. Crafted of solid 18K yellow gold, the ring features a lovely bezel-set carved cameo in green and white banded agate - chalcedony - of a woman or nymph playing a lyre or harp. It's an elegant and classical image in white, against the beautifully colored translucent green stone. The ring and setting are heftier than I often find with this style, and the high karat gold contrasts wonderfully with the coloring of the cameo. Full hallmarks remain inside. Measuring approximately 15 x 8.5 mm, the carved cameo is in excellent condition. The green is a lush color - when held to the light you can see how translucent it is, giving me the impression of green sea glass. When not held against the light it has a soft but rich slightly sage-y teal color. (Hard to capture accurately in my photos, I think it is prettier in person. Please note that your screen might show the color a little differently. I've taken photos with both a dark and light background to try and show some of the translucency.) Very, very pretty with the white figure in classical dress. The gold bezel also remains in great condition, and is holding the stone securely. There is a little bit of old grime on the back of the stone which I have left untouched. I also want to mention that there is no difference in color between the gold bezel and the rest of the ring - that is just a trick of the light in my photos.) The size of the stone gives a very nice presence on the hand, measuring approximately 16 x 15.9, including the upper shoulders; the rise off the finger is approximately 4.1 mm, making this very comfortable and easy to wear. The band has a sculptural feel with a simple and elegant design at each lower shoulder. In excellent condition, with no signs of having ever been sized, there are clear hallmarks inside: "SU Ltd" is the maker's mark, with hallmarks for 18K gold and being assayed in Chester in 1909. There is also a stamped number of "6670" which I am guessing is a design number. The ring has a finished weight of 3.38 grams on my scale. Currently a size 7.5 on my sizing mandrel, it fits more like a 7.75 due to the style of the band - the ring could be sized by a good jeweler, though you may lose some of the hallmarks A wonderful old ring in remarkable condition for its 111 years.
