About the Item

This Roman intaglio depicts one of the most emblematic gestures of Roman art: the dextrarum iunctio, the joining of right hands. Far more than a simple expression of affection, this gesture signified concord, mutual loyalty, and the formal bond between two individuals, most commonly in the context of marriage. In Roman visual culture, the joining of hands was understood as the moment in which two people entrusted themselves to one another, sealing a union that was both socially recognised and ritually sanctioned. Above the hands appears a flower or small flowering branch, a motif frequently associated with auspicious meanings. Although the botanical form is stylised, its general shape recalls flowers such as the carnation (Dianthus). Carnations carried connotations of enduring affection and fidelity. Other possible readings include a stylised myrtle flower, sacred to Venus and symbolic of fertility, harmony, and marital prosperity. Regardless of the precise species, the presence of a flower above the clasped hands adds a benevolent, hopeful dimension to the scene: an augury of growth, flourishing, and concord. Comparable pieces help illuminate the meaning of this composition. The British Museum preserves several rings featuring the dextrarum iunctio. Such combinations of hands and floral emblems were widely understood as visual expressions of harmony (omonoia), affection, and the wish for a prosperous union. Taken together, these elements identify the gem as belonging to the tradition of nuptial or concord symbolism common in the Roman world during the early Imperial period. The joining of hands represents the legal and emotional bond, while the flower above them serves as an emblem of fertility, vitality, and the hope that the union will “blossom.” This intaglio, therefore, is not merely decorative: it encapsulates a deeply meaningful message of unity, fidelity, and good fortune, transforming the ring into a personal charm for love and marital harmony.
