About the Item
Period: 17th century
Top size: 18mm
Ring size: 8
Weight: 19
This XVII century erotic garnet intaglio, made of 18 carat gold, represents a peculiar erotic scene which is supposed to be a copy of the famous roman spintria, a bronze tablet, from the Augusto or Tiberio’s reign and in which is shown a scene with a couple in a position similar to the one proposed here. The couple, in this case, is represented on a boat, in which an oil lamp can be seen suspended from the bow, while sea creatures emerge underneath. Erotic scenes, although peculiar, were widespread in Roman times, as evidenced by objects such as tintinnabula with a protective and auspicious function; or the same spintriae, or tiles that were used in the context of brothels. The intaglio shows a great engraving quality which allows a perfect reading of the scene, rich in details and embellished with an 18k yellow gold setting with geometric and arabesque decorations in the lower part of the stem and masks in the upper part.
