19th Century Egyptian Revival period 14K yellow gold Sphinx signet ring
Circa 1870
Unusual, beautifully detailed antique signet ring with a pair of Sphinxes at the shoulders, each flanked by a lizard and a pair of storks. The oval signet face engraved with intricate scrolled interlacing letters. Substantial quality, heavy gold piece.
The iconic Sphinx, half lion and half human, is a powerful symbol of protection, love and devotion. The Great Sphinx of Giza is one of the most recognizable monuments of the ancient world and Egypt, considered a marvel of human achievement. In the late 19th century, continued archaeological discoveries led to fascination with Egypt and its treasures. The opening of the Suez canal in 1869, Giuseppe Verdi's opera Aida, first performed in 1871 and the dramatic excavation of Tell El-Amarna in 1887 captured the public's imagination. The art world drew inspiration from Egyptian exotisism including in the field of jewelry design and this wonderful ring dates from this period.
