About the Item

A Georgian carnelian intaglio ring, the oval carnelian measuring 20 x 17mm, seal engraved with the head of Zeus Ammon, depicted in profile with ram’s horn, set in yellow gold mount with an open back and tapering gold shoulders, unmarked, tested as 18 carat gold, circa 1800, the head measuring 23 x 20mm, finger size L, gross weight 8 grams. This wonderful and characterful Georgian ring comes from the collection of Bentley Skinner, Jewellers by Royal Appointment to His Majesty King Charles III. This Georgian-era ring features a carnelian intaglio set in a yellow gold ring. The intaglio features the carved image of Zeus Ammon in profile, rendered in wonderful detail. Zeus Ammon was a syncretic deity who was a combination of attributes of both the Greek god, Zeus, and the Egyptian sun god, Amun-Re. Zeus Ammon became a cult god in the Greek colony of Cyrenaica (present day Libya), and Alexander the Great visited the sanctuary of Zeus Ammon in 331 BC, where the oracle proclaimed him to be the son of the god. This ring reflects the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century interest in the culture and arts of Ancient Greece and Rome, which came with a revived interest in Democracy during the Enlightenment period. As Zeus Ammon was associated with male potency and fertility, this was most likely a men’s ring. Should you choose to make this purchase we will delighted to send it to you in a Bentley Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.
