Il cammeo è realizzato in agata grigia, databile tra la fine del XVI e l’inizio del XVII secolo, e inserito in una montatura contemporanea in oro 18 carati che riprende lo stile rinascimentale, con una filigrana esterna, una scanalatura e una decorazione a rilievo che contribuisce a risaltare la raffigurazione centrale, in ottime condizioni conservative e di grande pregio artistico. Il cammeo riporta una raffigurazione di Cupido di profilo, di cui si scorgono le piccole ali sulla schiena, soggetto che fu particolarmente amato in epoca rinascimentale in quanto dio dell’amore e del pathos, oltre che simbolo dell’amicizia, aspetti che lo portarono ad essere particolarmente adorato anche in poesia, come nel Simposio di Platone o, in epoca alessandrina, nella favola di Amore e Psiche.
The cameo is made of grey agate, dating back to the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century, and inserted in a contemporary 18k gold frame that recalls the Renaissance style, with an external filigree, a groove and a relief decoration which helps to highlight the central representation, in excellent conservative conditions and of great artistic value. The cameo shows a depiction of Cupid in profile, of which the small wings on his back can be seen, a subject that was particularly loved in the Renaissance era as a god of love and pathos, as well as a symbol of friendship, aspects that led him to be particularly adored also in poetry, as in Plato's Symposium or, in the Alexandrian era, in the fable of Cupid and Psyche.

Castellani® has selected this Ancient Roman Agate Intaglio for the "Cleopatra" Ring Setting.
The intaglio dates to the 3rd to 7th Century.
The intaglio is both black and white agate, which is a hard stone and very good for carving. The agate has two layers of color, black on the top and white at the bottom. The agate intaglio is solid and is one piece. The carver was able to use these two color layers to give dimension and detail. The Column and Angel on the left wings are white and the balance is all black. The Carver knew the material he/she was carving and used this to create this very unique scene.
The intaglio shows two angels standing on either side of a column/pillar looking at the bust of a man on top of the pillar.
The angels are female and male. The bust on the pedestal is of a male.
The intaglio is set below the frame. The frame flairs out to a subtle point on the sides and has a flat surface.
