About the Item
Rare, historic sixteenth century posy (or posey) ring.
Posey rings were popular in France and England during the late middle ages until the 18th century and were given as gifts between lovers.
The name “posey” derives from the French word “poésie” and refers to the short messages engraved on the inside band, insuring that the message was known only to the couple. Jewelers held published books in their libraries from which their customers chose their inscription.
What makes this posey ring exceptional is the figural shape in the form of a love knot and the unusual inscription on the inside as well as the unusual spelling of the Old Latin word Usque, which helps us date the ring to the 1660 or earlier.
The inscription, "VSQVE AD FINEM" (reads as "usque ad finem") translates to "I will be faithful until the end". It is derived from an old gladiator motto, "I will fight until the end". The unusual spelling of VSQVE using V's instead of U's is due to its use in Old Latin, which used V for uppercase and U for lowercase until the year 1600. After 1600, U at times replaced the V until 1660, when V's were abolished altogether as a replacement for U.
The use of block capital letters in the inscription was less common after the mid-1600's and helps us to date the ring to the 16th to early 17th century.
A rare find, indeed.
