About the Item
Period: 238 A.D.
Ring size: 7 ½
Weight: 12,28 gr
The ring, made of bronze, can be dated to around 238, the year of Marcus Clodius Pupienus Maximus' ascension to the throne and death, depicted in the centre. According to what was stated in the Historia Augusta, although often unreliable, Pupienus ascended the Roman cursus honorum thanks to his military career which led him to ascend the throne after Maximinus the Thracian was brought to power by will of the army. The Roman Senate, therefore, decided to send Pupienus to Ravenna to militarily attack Maximinus, who was defeated and had to cede power to his opponent and his companion Balbinus, who remained in Rome to quell some popular revolts. That of Pupienus and Balbinus was, despite themselves, an extremely short reign, which saw them emperors between 22 April and 29 July 238, when they were killed. For this reason it is extremely rare to find depictions of the two emperors who reigned for only three months: in this case there is a coin depicting only Pupienus in profile, with the typical laurel wreath symbol of victory and triumph, furthermore, to contribute to his identification we have an inscription that reads «IMPCM CLOD PVPIENVS AVG».
