About the Item
Roman Celtic God Toutatis amuletic silver ring. Engraved horizontally to the centre with an oval ropework border encompassing the letters 'TOT' abbreviated from the Celtic god Toutatis, flanked by broad integrated shoulders which flow through to a tapering D-shape shank. Tested silver, approximately 6.50 grams in weight, circa 2nd-4th century AD.
The Celtic god Toutatis was worshipped in ancient Gaul and Britain, and was associated with the Roman gods Mars and Mercury. A number of Romano-British 'TOT' rings have been found in the East Midlands, notably in Lincolnshire which was the centre of the worship of this god.
Accompanied by documentation from the Portable Antiquities Scheme stating that this ring was reportedly from an old collection and likely was found in the East Midlands, possibly Lincolnshire. It is recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme under reference LIN-B34626; and disclaimed under the Treasure Act, reference 2009 T742.
