This delightful 2nd century Roman cameo is made of lapislazuli and is inserted in a 18 carat contemporary gold setting which recalls the antique style that was adopted for goldsmith objects; in fact, the essential setting is characterized only by a groove on the upper part which frames perfectly the cameo, helping to enhance the representation. The lapslazuli, although, is embellished by a sweet image of Cupid as a child, depicted in profile and recognizable by the small wings that emerge from his back: he was the son of Venus and Mars, most of the time he is depicted in his childhood and, rarely, as an adult because he is often associated with game and mockery, often capricious and par excellence god of love.
