About the Item

Period: 1th Century A.D. Provenance: Italy Ring size: 6 1/2 Weight: 10.7 gr The 1st century ring has a silver frame, in which is set a gold frame that outlines a peculiar amethyst intaglio depicting the Roman musical instrument known as Sistrum. This instrument, usually made of metal, has very ancient origins: it is assumed to come from Ancient Egypt, where it was sacred to the goddess Isis since she was supposedly the inventor. Later it found wide diffusion in the Middle East and in Greece, so much that it is mentioned in ceremonies described in the Old Testament. The peculiarity of the intaglio lies also in the fact that the instrument is accompanied by two butterflies, symbol of the soul and its transition between the earthly and spiritual world, and it is a meaning that is linked to the function of guide of the souls of the afterlife attributed to Isis, whose cult found spread in Ancient Rome after Egypt was reduced to a Roman province and emperors like Caligula favoured temples dedicated to the Egyptian goddess.

Helios, in Greek mythology, is the god of the sun and is often depicted as driving a chariot across the sky, bringing light to the world. He is a significant figure in the pantheon of Greek deities, and his name is derived from the Greek word for sun, "Helios." According to myth, Helios is the son of the Titans Hyperion and Theia, making him a second-generation Titan. His siblings include Selene, the goddess of the moon, and Eos, the goddess of the dawn. Helios is often described as a handsome and radiant god, with a crown of sun rays adorning his head. One of the most well-known stories involving Helios is the tale of his son Phaeton. In this myth, Phaeton, eager to prove his divine lineage, persuades his father to let him drive the sun chariot for a day. However, Phaeton is unable to control the powerful horses that pull the chariot, and chaos ensues. The earth is scorched, and to prevent further disaster, Zeus strikes Phaeton down with a lightning bolt. Helios is left grief-stricken by the loss of his son. Helios is also associated with the island of Rhodes, where he was particularly revered. The Colossus of Rhodes...
