About the Item

Period: 3rd – 4th Century A.D Provenance: Italy Ring size: 5 Weight: 7 gr The Roman intaglio, dated between the third and fourth century, is made of silver and has a particular application in the lower part of the stem of the ring. The intaglio, on the other hand, certainly represents a deity, although of difficult interpretation that, judging from the element placed to the right, which is a caduceus, could refer to Mercury, leading to interpret the engravings that can be seen at the ankles, as symbol of the talars, the typical winged shoes that connoted the messenger of the gods. The other ornamental motif, however, remains doubtful but could be interpreted to a purse, emblem of its being protector of trade and merchants and with which, sometimes, it could be represented.
