About the Item
The rarest and most valuable turquoise in the world: Lander Blue. Discovered by a blackjack dealer named Rita who was picnicking in the area, the tiny "hat mine" (so called because it could be covered up with a hat) is located in Lander County, Nevada, between Battle Mountain and the ghost town of Tenabo. Only 109 pounds of turquoise was extracted from the tiny mine before it was depleted.
Lander Blue turquoise gemstones are famous for their rich blue color and dark brown to black veining.
This handmade sterling silver ring features a stunning cabochon of natural, untreated Lander Blue turquoise. The stone measures 9.18mm tall by 7.90mm wide. If the stone was a diamond, it would be approximately 2.31 carats. Of course, Lander Blue turquoise is profoundly rarer than ordinary diamonds -which are so plentiful, there appears to be enough for anyone who wants one to have one.
I acquired this ring from the present owner of the Lander Blue mine and it ships with a card certifying its provenance.
The spider-webbing of the stone is mirrored in the Tufa stone cast pattern o the sterling silver mounting. The ring is signed on the interior by the artist, Philander Begay. The ring shows no signs of wear and appears entirely unworn, though not "new" as in freshly made.
Currently a size 10.5, it could be resized by you local jeweler. The band 16mm tall in front, tapering to 13.46mm on the shoulders and 9.87mm at the back. It's a dense, exceedingly well made, finely crafted ring.
For the turquoise collector, this is quite simply the crown jewel.

Silver Ring American, Circa 1920s
Located in Northampton, MA
This sleek, graphic turquoise and silver ring was created near the 1920s, and is consistent in design, quality, and materials to rings created by the Zuni nation; however the ring is not signed. And therefore, it cannot be sold as "Native American."
Some people prefer to retain the "patina" almost always encountered on rings created by Native Americans. But this has always puzzled me. When Queen Elizabeth toured Africa and wore her favorite diamond crown, that crown was thoroughly cleaned and polished. I don't recall ever seeing Frank Ghery or Elsa Peretti or Paloma Picasso silver jewelry...
