About the Item

Artemis "the huntress" Intaglio ring with carved carnelian Beautiful signed ring, created during the Victorian period, back in the 1890. It was crafted in solid yellow gold of 18 karats with high polished finish and mount with an intaglio. The carving is depicting the profile bust in low relief of Artemis "the huntress" facing to the right, with beautiful hair, draped with classical ropes and holding a bow and arrows. Gemstones: Mount in the center in a semi round bezel, with one intaglio cut carved in low relief from natural translucent orangish carnelian of 6.5 carats. Birthstone: July Weight: 6.95 Grams, (4.46 Dwt). Size: 6.5 sizeable. Measurements: The main element from the top view is 19 mm by 17.5 mm (0.75 x 0.69 Inches). Hallmarks: Tested for 18 karats. Artemis (Diana), in ancient Greek mythology and religion, is the goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, nature, vegetation, childbirth, care of children, and chastity. She was heavily identified with Selene, the Moon, and Hecate, another Moon goddess, and was thus regarded as one of the most prominent lunar deities in mythology, alongside the aforementioned two. She would often roam the forests of Greece, attended by her large entourage, mostly made up of nymphs, some mortals, and hunters. The goddess Diana is her Roman equivalent. Intaglio is an engraved gem, frequently is a small and usually semi-precious gemstone that has been carved, in the Western tradition normally with images or inscriptions only on one face. The engraving of gemstones was a major luxury art form in the Ancient world, and an important one in some later periods. Strictly speaking, engraving means carving in intaglio (with the design cut into the flat background of the stone), but relief carvings (with the design projecting out of the background as in nearly all cameos) are also covered by the term. This article uses cameo in its strict sense, to denote a carving exploiting layers of differently coloured stone. The activity is also called gem carving and the artists gem-cutters. References to antique gems and intaglios in a jewellery context will almost always mean carved gems; when referring to monumental sculpture, counter-relief, meaning the same as intaglio, is more likely to be used. Vessels like the Cup of the Ptolemies and heads or figures carved in the round are also known as hardstone carvings. Collateral: It is accompanied by a presentation jewelry box.
