About the Item
Eytan Brandes made this as an engagement ring for a customer about a million years ago. Once the ring came back from the stone-settter with all the teeny weeny side diamonds set, the customer was supposed to show up with the 2 carat center diamond, but instead, the customer showed up with a much larger diamond and a much weirder ring idea. Eytan made the weird ring and put the original ring aside, then promptly forgot about it. For thirteen years.
The ring reemerged earlier this year, literally, since it was lying at the bottom of a box of doo-dads and doohickeys that got excavated in the course of moving stuff around after a glamorous roof leak.
Eytan has made this design several times, always with a diamond center. Since this one seemed ill-fated as a diamond engagement ring, and since it looks great as a right-hand ring, Eytan set it with a vivid green tourmaline, nicely cut and with just a hint of blue undertones.
The stone is beautiful, but it's not eye-clean. It has a sizable inclusion on one side. When it comes to tourmaline, we ignore the CLARITY part of the four C's and focus instead on cut, color, carats and a factor that, since it has to start with C, I guess we'd call CHARACTER. (If it was the 4 S's, we'd call it SOUL.).
Like all of Eytan's rings, this one is built to last, stinting on absolutely nothing. It weighs a hefty 8.2 grams and the tiny diamonds (34 earth-mined and untreated bright boys weighing a total of 0.15 carats) are scrupulously pavé-set by our favorite stone setter in a shallow channel where they're safe from scratches and damage.
