About the Item
This ring was made in 1870-1880 ca. The cameo is carved out of a shell and ounted in a 14 karat gold setting. The subject of the cameo is the Greek hero Hercules, carved as a bust in profile wearing a lion skin.
Hercules or Heracles, his geek name, was the son of Zeus and Alcmene, a tall and intelligent beauty. He was considered to be the greatest hero of Greek antiquity. Extraordinary strength, courage, ingenuity were credited to him, many brave deeds are the contents of countless stories, the most famous being the twelve labours of Heracles. Besides the club the lion skin was his iconographic attribute. The shank is hallmarked on the inside with the greyhound.
