About the Item
A wonderful example of the Stuart period jewelry, this Stuart Rock Crystal betrothal ring is set in 18 Kt gold and inlaid in 18K. The ring has a double hand carved border of repeating triangles, with a step faceted crystal, a decorative feature of rings of this period. The pink foiling provided light to the ring (in an era when open back rings had not been invented.) The circular rock crystal covers a knotted gold wire cypher carefully set upon plaited brown hair woven into the initials of the loved one. The face of the ring sits in a rubbed over closed back high carat gold setting.
Stuart Crystals were a form of "political jewelry" which demonstrated loyalty to the fallen King Charles I in the aftermath of his execution in 1649 under the leadership of Oliver Cromwell.
The ring should be worn with care and not submerged in water. Some very slight loss to the enamel.
Each side of the band features decorative black florentine enamel work. The enamel is limited to the shoulders so lucky for us, this ring can be resized. Size 6.25 and 3.22 grams.
