About the Item
Post-Medieval Rock Crystal Ring. Set to centre with an octagonal faceted rock crystal in a closed back raised bezel setting with inlaid traces of white enamel, leading to shoulders featuring a carved foliate motif inlaid with further traces of white enamel and flowing through to a D shape shank. Tested yellow gold, approximately 2 grams in weight, circa 1680-1720.
Mourning rings were popular in Britain from the early 17th century until the late 19th century, often worn to commemorate the life of an individual after their death. Black or white enamel was generally favoured, with white enamel often used to commemorate children and unmarried adults. Oman (1974, p73) notes that by the 17th century mourning rings had become something of a “status symbol”, with late-century rings (often set with crystal) being among the better executed examples.
This ring was found between a derelict farm house and an oak tree by a metal detector in Hambleton, North Yorkshire on the 22nd March 2024.
