The Titanic sank in 1910. That same year, this men's ring was created in France. If you look at photographs of Titanic's interior, you can see a kinship between this great ring and that great ship. The elegance, the neoclassical touches, the exquisite craftsmanship. The European Art Nouveau design aesthetic was in the air and both the ring and the ship captured it. But the ring made it to this moment in time and it did so practically unscathed; a remarkable accomplishment for any jewel let alone one with a stone as fragile as an aquamarine. At 1.9 carats and measuring 12.54 mm x 8.38 mm, this bezel-set stone is probably about as large as a man would want to go on a gemstone ring without crossing into eccentric, rock-star territory. This impeccably crafted 18k yellow gold ring is dignified, the aquamarine is light in tone but fiery by nature. The shoulders are neoclassical in design and feature pierced and carved wheat sheaths. There are two rows of four rose-cut diamonds set in silver that total under 1/4 of a carat. They provide not glitz but a very subtle current of electricity. This ring is perfectly tailored and it is among the most comfortable rings to wear that I've ever owned. The aquamarine has just a couple of natural inclusions to keep things interesting and is very well cut and wholly undamaged, with facet-junctions as crisp as the day they left the lapidary's table. This is a ring that has been cherished. You cannot only see it, you can feel it when you hold it. This would make an exceptional and unique wedding band for a modern, creative man instead of just a plain metal circle. And of course it would look stunning on any woman. This ring is beautiful and intelligently designed and genderless. Tiny rose-cut diamonds are not inherently feminine: they're rocks, born inside volcanoes. This ring hails from an age when young men wore them simply because they were beautiful architectural objects. If a man had fine hands, a ring would—and still does—draw attention to them. Likewise, it distracts from hands that are maybe not so fine. I've heard a lot of men say, "I don't wear rings," and I think that's because most men have only been exposed to one species: a yellow gold pinkie ring with a face of black onyx and a cheap diamond in the middle. I wouldn't a ring either if that was the only option at the salad bar. This is a really cool ring for that twenty-seven-year-old guy working at Google or Apple or at a startup in what—when I lived out there—we used to call Palto Alto. Nobody else will have a ring like this; you'll be unique. It'll become part of you. And when you depart this world and the ring remains, something of you remains in it. Scratches you left behind, molecules of everything you touched while wearing it absorbed into the gold. This antique French aquamarine ring is currently a size 10.5 and could be resized by your local jeweler. Also, it rises not even 5 mm off the surface of your finger so it won't get caught on your jeans and you can wear gloves without issue.
