About the Item

This charming 19th century repousse trophy cup was made in Dublin and is a beautiful example of Irish silversmithing. The sterling silver piece features detailed floral motifs in repousse and elaborate scroll handles, finished with a gilt wash interior. Curiously whilst there are Dublin city hallmarks clearly stamped on the piece there appears to be no date mark and only a partly legible maker's mark, which we believe to be for Randal Cashell. Aiding us in dating the piece is an inscription in the side of the loving cup indicating it was likely presented as a trophy in the 1830s. The engraving reads 'SBUC - 1838 - 3D Class Cup - Won by J. Purrolts - No. Go' leading us to believe it was perhaps a racing or sporting trophy. This engraving indicates manufacture to have taken place in the 1830s prior to the trophy being presented. The weighty trophy is in good antique order for its age with some fairly expected bumps and abrasions associated with age and use. Because of the gilt wash interior it would be very easy to purpose this trophy as a vessel for flowers as the silver inside would not discolour with water exposure. We love Irish silver which is getting harder to find, and this is a really beautiful example with many decades of enjoyment ahead for its new custodian. Marked - Dublin city marks, 'RC' partly rubbed and likely for Randal Cashell along with personal inscription Measures - 16.5cm H x 24.5cm W x 13.5cm D Total weight of piece - 821 grams
