About the Item

Item Details : Presenting a rare and beautiful Japanese collection of three pure silver koban featuring the most recognized scenes from 'Katsushika Hokusai’s' iconic woodblock print series ‘Thirty-Six Views of Mt Fuji’ from the Edo period. Hokusai created the Thirty Six Views in 1831 both as a response to a domestic travel boom and as part of his personal obsession with Mount Fuji. Undoubtedly, it was this monumental print series that made Hokusai’s name renowned both domestically within Japan and abroad. The three koban come in a felt and silk lined presentation box. The inside of the case lid has gold characters printed on the top line. ‘Thirty-Six Views of Mt Fuji’ and the line underneath is the artist’s name ‘Hokusai Katsushika’. The characters on the bottom right hand read ‘Jun-gin-sei’ Made from Pure Silver. The three scenes featured are as follows. The Great Wave off Kanagawa ‘Kanagawa nami-ura’ Fine Wind, Clear Morning ‘Gaifu kaise’ Rainstorm Beneath the Summit ‘Sanka hakuu’ The reverse side of each koban features the artist, Katsushika Hokusai himself as depicted in his well-recognized 1839 self portrait. The characters under the image read 'Hokusai Katsushika' Self Portrait (lit.) The marks under this image on each koban are the Japanese standard assay and hallmarks including the characters ‘Jun-gin’ Pure Silver, the Japanese Flag and the silver purity of 1000 within the rhombus mark.
