About the Item

A Victorian silver epergne and suite of six dessert baskets, in eighteenth century neo-classical style; the epergne with central slat and star pierced basket supported on a waisted embossed husked swag gadrooned body, four smaller baskets on scrolling arms issuing from the main body, on scrolling legs between cast husk swag and festoon drapery, crested; the six baskets, similar to epergne, two large and four small, on spreading oval bases, largest 33.2cm., 13 1/8 in. over handles, all baskets with shaped blue glass liners 37.7cm., 14 7/8 in. high, 157ozs, 4906gms, hallmarked London 1896, maker Charles Stuart Harris. An impressive late Victorian silver and blue glass epergne. Epergnes became popular in the eighteenth century as grand centrepieces to display fruit and sweetmeats after a formal meal. This set is crafted in the Georgian neoclassical style, and features scrolling and festoon details. The epergne features four backets surrounding one larger basket, and the set comes with a further six baskets, perfect for displaying and serving a wide variety of sweets and fruit. The blue glass lining of the piece is a gorgeous shade of royal blue that provides a perfect complement to the silver. This epergne comes from the collection of Bentley Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to His Majesty the King. A 5 dish epergne by The Alexander Clark Company London. Formed with 5 removable pierced dishes, the circular foot raised on four feet, the frame and branches decorated throughout with elaborate pierced work and with scrolling branches. The business was established in 1891 by Clift Alexander Mawer Clark at 138 Fenchurch Street, London. Manufacturing premises were opened in 1894 at 29 Market Place, Oxford Street. In 1900 the firm was active at Welbeck Works, Randall Street, Sheffield, transferring its activity to James Street Works, St. Paul's, Birmingham, in 1918. The firm was active also at 29 Market Place, London (1894-1910), 188 Oxford Street, London (1900-1915), 125-126 Fernchurch Street, London (1909-1918), 38-40 Mitre Street, Aldgate, London (1921), 17 Sycamore Street, Sheffield (1921) and 38 Leadenhall Street, London (1941).
