About the Item
Portuguese Silver Hammered Salver, Reign of King José I (1750–1777)
An exceptional Portuguese silver salver from the reign of King José I, crafted in the 18th century and showcasing a striking spiral-fluted hammered design. Measuring 35 cm in diameter, this piece exemplifies the transition from late Baroque exuberance to the more restrained Rococo forms of mid-18th-century Portuguese silverwork.
Hallmarked in Porto with the P-14.0 assay mark (in use between 1768 and circa 1784), and bearing the silversmith’s mark TGS (P-297.0), attributable to Tomé Gomes da Silva, active between 1774 and 1799. Tomé Gomes da Silva is recognized for his refined craftsmanship and contribution to the artistic legacy of Porto’s goldsmithing tradition.
This salver combines bold decorative elements with functional elegance, making it a remarkable representation of Portuguese silver from the reign of King José I. A highly collectible piece, it stands out for its craftsmanship, historical significance, and distinctive spiral-fluted form.
