Late Victorian Jewelry

LATE VICTORIAN STYLE

Also called Aesthetic period jewelry, historians have determined that antique late Victorian jewelry and watches are representative of an era that lasted from about 1880 until 1901 and ushered in the Belle Époque.

Queen Victoria wore her heart on her sleeve, and her emotions were reflected in her fashion and in what we now call Victorian jewelry. By about 1880, Queen Victoria and her constituents were ready to look to the future. The dark skies were parting and fashion was changing. There was also a major shift in industry.

While in the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign the focus was on manufacturing, toward the later years there was a renewed interest and appreciation of the handmade. The late Victorian period (1880–1901) was referred to as the Aesthetic period and coincided with these changing tastes.

The Aesthetic Movement, concerned with “art for art’s sake,” began in Britain around the 1870s and became recognized by designers and artists worldwide, eventually resulting in the Arts and Crafts movement (1880s–1920s).

Stylistically, jewelry of this time period did not resemble its earlier Victorian counterparts, in fact it was in complete opposition to what preceded it. Gone were the mourning jewelry, heavy brooches and large necklaces. Late Victorian-era jewelry was smaller, lighter and more dainty. Women still layered pieces, though, and favored smaller scatter pins. Jewelry also became an evening accessory and not so visible during the day.

Women were starting to actively participate in sporting events (socially, of course, not professionally), so athletic motifs showed up on their accessories. Lockets and heart pendants remained popular, but the REGARD or DEAREST rings of the early Victorian period were replaced by Mizpah pieces, which means “the Lord watches over me” in Hebrew. These items were exchanged between two people to symbolize a close bond.

Diamonds came into fashion, and semiprecious gems such as amethysts and opals became prevalent, too. Using gemstones for their natural beauty and not their worth was something that jewelers of the Aesthetics movement felt passionate about, and this ideology would really become relevant in Art Nouveau jewelry.

The Brits still looked to their monarchs to dictate the latest trends. Queen Victoria’s daughter-in-law Alexandra famously wore a dog-collar necklace, also known as a collier de chien, made up of multiple strands of pearls, to hide a scar. This style of necklace quickly rose to prominence. Toward the end of the 19th century, solitaire rings were also becoming fashionable thanks to Tiffany Co.’s advent of the six-prong diamond setting in 1886. Platinum was starting to be used in jewelry production as well. Edwardian and, afterward, Art Deco engagement rings that followed in the wake of Queen Victoria’s death in 1901 would be characterized by complex geometric designs and platinum settings.

Women were the biggest influences on jewelry. They joined the workforce, fought for their independence and overall began to lead a much more active lifestyle. Jewelry had to become comfortable and serve multiple purposes. While in the United States, the Gibson Girls lifestyle was emulated by young women, and starlets became trendsetters.

Finally, the international expositions made the world seem like a much smaller place and jewelry from North Africa and India captured people’s attention, appealing to those who already favored Revival jewelry from the Etruscans to the Romans.

Old Cut Diamond Pearl Pendant in 12 Gold Sterling + Akoya Pearl Necklace
Located in Sherman Oaks, CA
We acquired this extraordinary pendant from an antique jewelry dealer in New Zealand. Sort of a hybrid between a garland and a wreath, it boasts at least 1.7 carats in old cut diamonds plus eight pearls, all meticulously set from its hinged bale to its hinged diamond "tail." The enhancer bale is split in the back so that it can be worn with pearls. To that end, we're including a gorgeous 16" strand of 5.5 to 6mm Akoya saltwater pearls. We had these pearls strung specifically for this pendant, and to give the necklace a more contemporary feel, the pearls have been fully knotted in black silk, which we think really pops with the oxidized face of the pendant. The closure is a 14 karat white gold pearl clasp. WEIGHTS & MEASUREMENTS: > Pendant Length: 2" > Pendant Width (at widest point): 1-1/8" > Pendant Weight: 7.15 grams > Necklace Length: 16" (See below for more information about these pearls) > Total Weight (pearl necklace + pendant): 17 grams > Diamonds: 54 stones ranging from 1.2mm to 3.9mm for a total estimated diamond weight of 1.73 carats. More information on the diamonds is provided below. > Pearls (Pendant): Eight pearls ranging from 3.5mm to 5.6mm for a total estimated pearl weight of 0.59 grams (0.157 momme). More information on the pearls is provided below. METALS & PENDANT AGE: We think this pendant probably dates from the late 19th or very early 20th century. While the pearls and the diamonds provide clues, the big tipoff is the fact that the stones are set in a thin layer of silver soldered onto 14 karat gold. This technique -- a thin layer of white metal (platinum was also used after around 1870) -- was used until white gold came into general use in the mid- to late 1910s. The distinctive black metal finish is nothing more than generations of the silver's natural oxidization. THE DIAMONDS: The diamonds on this piece predate the proliferation of bright white and clean South African diamonds...

VICTORIAN Bohemian 1880 Gilt Festoon Necklace With 112.90 Ctw In Natural Garnets
Located in Miami, FL
Victorian large festoon necklace with Bohemian red garnets. This is a fabulous and rare antique festoon Bohemian necklace created in England during the late Victorian era, back in the 1880's. The outstanding necklace is pretty impressive in size and was masterfully crafted in gilt metal. It is composed by nineteen links and five dangle drops elements, which are embellished with a fabulous assortment of three hundred-ninety-eight natural intense red garnets. These rose and cabochons cut garnet stones were a Victorian favorite, often used in late-era jewelry designs. The necklace length is little over the sixteen inches and is fitted with a concealed security push box. This is an amazing iconic piece from the period in tremendous grade of preservation with absolutely no gemstones replacements. Surely an eye-catcher and a great conversation piece. Festoon Necklace A festoon necklace, is a design motif of a garland or string of flowers, leaves or ribbons. A festoon is a type of necklace that contains several drapes or swags of beads, chains, metal extensions, or other parts as the core elements of the design. Was very popular in the 18th and 19th century and even today. The Victorian Jewelry This era is one of the most influenced and influential periods of antique jewelry. This period is defined by the British monarch, in this case, Alexandrina Victoria, the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as the Empress of India, years 1837-1901. There are 3 sub-periods within this era. First, the early, Romantic period, which is soaked in traditions, natural motifs in gold and silver, clear stones only being worn during the day and colored gems by night. The second being the Grand or mourning period, which coincides with the death of Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert the consort, who died in December of 1861. This period included large, dark, somber, dramatic jewelry, with a lot of black onyx, jet wood, amethyst, garnet and gold. This lasted until 1880's, when the aesthetic period of jewelry began. The Late or third stage of the Victorian period, use more complex and feminine motifs, returning to the natural, including many floral and celestial designs, with more decadent gemstones, lasting until the turn of the century. The Victorian era of jewelry includes many movements found in other countries, including revivals such as the Etruscan the Roman and the Egyptian as well as the Art Nouveau, Liberty style and Arts and Crafts design movements which lead into the beginning of the twentieth century. Country: Europe, England. Period: Victorian, 1870-1890. Garnets: Mounted in flush prongs settings, with 19 calibrated oval cabochons cut of natural vivid red garnets, with a combined total weight of about 47.5 carats. Garnets: Mounted in flush prongs settings, with 5 graduated pear cabochons cut of natural vivid red garnets, with a combined total weight of about 28 carats. Garnets: Mounted in flush prongs settings, with 374 calibrated round cabochons cut with light facets on top, carved from natural vivid red garnets, with a combined total weight of about 37.40 carats. Birthstone: Red garnets for the month of January. Weight: 98.40 Grams, (63.10 Dwt). Size: 16.25 Inches, (41.28 Cm.). Measurements: The maximum dangle-drop in the center is 56 mm (2.20 Inches). The beautiful statement cocktail ring has been designed with classic patterns in an oval shape. The settings of the gemstones are finished with millegrain technique. Opal: Mount in the center in a bezel setting, with 1 oval cabochon cut (19 x 12 x 6 mm) of a natural opal, with an estimate weight of 7.89 carats. The opal is natural, not treated and with partial white matrix in the under bottom. Diamonds: Mounted around the center gemstone in flush settings, with 32 old European rose cut natural diamonds, with a combined weight of 1.06 carats. Birthstone: Opal for the month of October. Weight: 5.40 Grams, (3.46 Dwt). Size: 6.5 and may be easily sized on request. Measurements: 25.4 mm by 18 mm (0.71 x 0.71 Inches) and raise 7 mm over the finger. Hallmarks: No marks, the ring was electronically tested for 14 karats gold, 9 karats gold and .800 silver on top.
