Victorian Jewelry

VICTORIAN STYLE

The reign of Queen Victoria encapsulates a quickly evolving period of history — and jewelry styles were no exception. No single period has seen such a diverse group of jewelry attributed to it than the Victorian era. Today, there is a vast collection of authentic antique Victorian jewelry and watches on 1stDibs.

Victorian jewelry is named after Queen Victoria, whose reign lasted from 1837 to 1901, making her the second longest-ruling monarch. (She was surpassed by Queen Elizabeth II in 2015.) During this time, different styles of fashion and jewelry came and went. Thanks to our fascination with royalty and swoon-worthy melodramas like Netflix’s The Crown — which is rife with evocative fashion, jewelry and interiors — and the 2017 feature film Victoria Abdul, we are all familiar with her story. After the death of Victoria’s father and three childless uncles, she ascended to the throne at age 18. In 1840, Queen Victoria married the love of her life, her first cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

Queen Victoria loved serpentine jewels, and she had even more power to shape trends than Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle do today. The British monarch’s best-known piece in this mold is the gold coiled-snake engagement ring she received from Prince Albert — the sinuous reptile was considered a symbol of everlasting love.

The Queen's 63-year reign has been divided by historians into the Romantic period, the early happy years, circa 1837–60; the Grand period, marked by the deaths of the Queen’s mother and husband, circa 1860–80; and the late Victorian or Aesthetic period, which lasted from about 1880 until 1901 and ushered in the Belle Époque. Queen Victoria wore her heart on her sleeve, and her fashion and jewelry reflected her emotions.

Romantic period jewelry, which featured common decorative motifs and was embellished with seed pearls, coral and turquoise, was a celebration of the young monarch’s love. Everything changed with the death of Prince Albert, and the Grand period is most often associated with mourning jewelry. Jewelry was smaller, lighter and more dainty during the late Victorian period. During this era, diamonds came into fashion, and semiprecious gems such as amethysts and opals became prevalent, too. Using gemstones for their natural beauty and not their worth was something that jewelers of the era felt passionate about, and this ideology would really become relevant in Art Nouveau jewelry.

Find a collection of authentic antique Victorian jewelry — from rings, necklaces and brooches to a range of other accessories — on 1stDibs.

Antique Victorian Serpentine Scottish Agate Brooch
Located in Stamford, CT
Undulating swirls of agate in mellow colors are cut and polished, then set in silver. Texture and softness were created by the jeweler with his choice of patterned agates as well as his ability to sculpt the stone. The pink agates are not frequently seen in scottish 19th century jewelry. Here they beautifully punctuate the horizontal plane. All of the workmanship was performed by hand Scottish jewelry, as well as Scottish tradition, were brought to the forefront during the second half of the 19th century because Queen Victorian and Prince Albert were deeply involved with and romanced Scottish tradition. At their privately owned castle Balmoral they dressed in Scottish clothing and wore Scottish jewelry. Their dedication brought Scottish agate...

Coctail Ring Diamond Star Black Enamel J Dauphin
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Star Covered Black Enamel “Cosmic Orb” Ring with Black Diamonds and White Diamonds 14K Gold Plated — J Dauphin This black enamel diamond ring by J Dauphin features a cosmic sphere orb design crafted in 14k gold-plated brass with black enamel, set with black diamonds and white diamonds. The design is inspired by Victorian jewelry, Memento Mori jewelry, and traditional symbolic enamel rings, and belongs to the designer’s Panim el Panim series. The sphere has long served as a symbol of wholeness, infinity, unity, and cosmic structure. In spiritual and symbolic jewelry traditions, it represents a universe without beginning or end, reflecting the idea of perfect form, completeness, and interconnected existence. In mystical and esoteric symbolism, the sphere is associated with harmony, balance, integration, and continuity, expressing a seamless and unified reality. It invites contemplation on cosmic order, universal connection, and the relationship between seen and unseen worlds. Panim el Panim, meaning “face to face,” derives from Kabbalistic tradition and refers to direct spiritual encounter, mutual transformation, and intimate connection. Within the language of Kabbalah-inspired jewelry, it speaks to relationships, presence, reciprocity, and deep inner awakening. This ring appeals to multiple collector categories including Victorian inspired jewelry, Memento Mori rings, black enamel jewelry...

Imperial Topaz Pearl Gold Ring Certified Untreated, London, 1843 Size 10.5
Located in Northampton, MA
This vivid pink imperial topaz ring -hand-crafted in England over 180 years ago- is one of the rarest and most unapologetically regal rings you will ever encounter. A size 10.5 ring, it was originally created for a man. But could of course be worn by anyone today. In the era this ring was created, men wore pearls. And no man would feel uncomfortable wearing a flashy pink gemstone because there is absolutely no other gemstone that looks like this. Topaz is a common gemstone and is typically white. It is irradiated to achieve its popular blue and pink colors. But naturally pink topaz is not common. It is in fact exceedingly rare, considerably rarer than diamonds. And this particular natural pink topaz gem is vividly saturated. It flashes purple. Having reviewed images of the pink imperial topaz necklace and earrings King Charles presented his wife, Queen Camilla...

The front of the cross is delicately set with a total of 12 rose-cut diamonds, arranged in a scalloped border pattern that enhances their subtle sparkle. Each stone is securely set in silver, as was customary in the era to best reflect the light from candlelit interiors. The reverse of the pendant features beautifully detailed engraved flower motifs in relief, adding an additional layer of craftsmanship and making the back as decorative as the front — a feature often seen in early European cross pendants. Materials: Silver front, 14K yellow gold reverse Gemstones: Rose-cut diamonds Dimensions: 45 mm x 25 mm Weight: 5.4 grams Origin: Likely Dutch or Northern European Period: Mid-19th century (circa 1850) Condition: Excellent antique condition with fine patina and minor wear consistent with age This pendant is both a spiritual and artistic treasure, perfect for collectors of antique religious jewelry...
