Hri Sordet
Fils Genève. An 18ct Yellow Gold Keywind Lever Quarter Repeater Hunter Pocket Watch C1860.
Dial: The fine and elegant white enamel dial with Roman numerals and outer minute track. The original fine blued steel Breguet style moon hands complimenting the dial beautifully. The dial is protected by a mineral glass.
Case: The 18ct yellow gold case with the front cover being engine turned with a beautiful engraved monogram underneath a Coronet showing that this watch has Royal provenance. The back cover has a crisp engine turning. The inner cover is signed Hri Sordet
Fils Genève with a description of the movement. There are two holes in the inner cover. One is to wind the watch and the other is to set the hands. The cases are all hallmarked and numbered. The slide for the repeater is at the four o'clock side of the case.
Movement: The superb slim line movement with compensation balance, blued overcoil hairspring, slow fast regulation and jewelled. The hammers and gongs are clearly visible as is the winding barrel. The watch works well and chimes the hours and quarters clearly. It is unusual to have a lever escapement as most watches from this period had cylinder escapements.
Hri Sordet was a prominent Geneva watchmaker who founded the firm. He later served as the Director of the Geneva School of Watchmaking (École d’Horlogerie de Genève) from 1879 to 1889. He ran the business with his son Edouard. They were renowned for high-precision watchmaking and creating extremely small watch movements. This watch is rare as it such a small quarter repeater in fine pristine condition. Examples of their work can be found in the Musée d'art et d'histoire in Geneva. This watch would make a fine addition to ones collection.
