About the Item
Centre Second Flyback Chronograph 44mm Pocket Watch Movement
by Nicole, Nielsen
Co dates back to circa 1864,
retailed by Mac Donnell
Co, Sydney (signed to the dial)
Invented
patented by A. Nielsen,
a flyback chronograph is a type of watch movement that
enables the chronograph function to be reset and
restarted instantly with a single button press.
Unlike a standard chronograph,
which requires three separate steps—stopping, resetting, and starting—
the flyback mechanism combines all three into one seamless action.
With a white porcelain regulator format dial,
featuring original hands, subsidiary seconds at 9 o'clock,
hour indication subsidiary dial at 3 o'clock,
minutes and the chronograph indications are
on the outer radial dial which features 5-minute makers.
Manual Movement is engraved
“Nielsen Capt 14 Soho Square, London” and numbered 7602
Nicole, Nielsen
Co. was founded in 1839 by Swiss-born watchmakers
Charles Victor Adolphe Nicole and Jules Philippe Capt.
By 1858, the company had moved to larger premises at 14 Soho Square,
where it remained until its closure in 1934.
Nicole
Capt produced movements and watches for renowned names
such as E. J. Dent, Charles Frodsham, and others.
From around 1870 and for the next 60 years,
Nicole Nielsen was known for crafting some of the finest and most complex English watches ever made.
Their work included tourbillons, chronographs, and bespoke timepieces.
Nicole is widely recognized as a pioneer of the modern chronograph and the split-seconds chronograph.
In 1862, he received patent for an improved chronograph featuring a castle ratchet mechanism.
Soon afterward, additional enhancements included a split-seconds hand and a chronograph minute counter.
Around 1870, Danish watchmaker Sophus Emil Nielsen joined Nicole as a partner,
leading to the firm being renamed Nicole, Nielsen
Co.
