When it comes to the unusual, that describes my penchant for collecting. If this is the first time you have stopped by Vintage Watch Corner I am sure you have noticed my sweet spot is WW1 military watches. I suppose it is because this was the period that wrist watches were being developed and worn, born out of a necessity for our troops back then. I can affectionately called “MacGyverism”, Let me explain! What do I mean MacGyverism? It can be explained like this! A person that utilizes any available resources to resolve a situation that they may be in to a successful conclusion. So, jewelers in the early 1900’s used small “Hunter Configuration” pocket watch movements (often ladies sizes 3/0 and 0 sizes) to install in watch cases that could be used on the wrist, this change started a whole new cottage industry for watch case manufacturers. They made watch cases in different metals / alloys to accommodate different quality of watch movements. The watch I am offering today is a genuine Waltham “Doughboy” wristwatch as indicated on the dial. Look at the name Waltham below the 12, then look carefully below the 12, you see “Doughboy”. This was Waltham homage to the infantryman. This is a 3/0 size, this size is getting much harder to source. I have restored this one from the ground up. I had the dial refinished at International Dial, one of the few dial refinishing companies that utilize the same dial templates from some of the most well know American watch companies, Waltham, Elgin and Hamilton to name a few. I gently polished the case to bring out the luster I installed a new crystal The movement was torn down and serviced August 2022 I sourced NOS Waltham 3/0 hands The case is solid sterling silver, a real treat today The stem and crown “pop” when to pull out to set the watch. The band I paid very close attention too. This strap is close to period correct in style. It is made to change character overtime depending on your usage. It is meant to capture scuffs and scratches and will lighten and darken the band as worn. Each strap will have its own unique look and last for years. • Thick, High Quality strap - 3.5mm thickness • Length is 120mm x 80mm • Thick, upgraded stainless steel is 20mm at buckle, rugged appearance. • This is a thick, quality black leather band and that is made well and will last • Band is designed for WILL show markings and is made to take on a distressed look as it is worn. This is from the MacGyver Television series starring Richard Dean Anderson who always found ways to resolve a situation through his ingenious ways through whatever available resource was available What is a Doughboy and how did it get its name? It’s unknown exactly how U.S. service members in World War I (1914-18) came to be dubbed doughboys—the term most typically was used to refer to troops deployed to Europe as part of the American Expeditionary Forces—but there are a variety of theories about the origins of the nickname. According to one explanation, the term dates back to the Mexican War of 1846-48, when American infantrymen made long treks over dusty terrain, giving them the appearance of being covered in flour, or dough. As a variation of this account goes, the men were coated in the dust of adobe soil and as a result were called “adobes,” which morphed into “dobies” and, eventually, “doughboys.” Among other theories, according to “War Slang” by Paul Dickson the American journalist and lexicographer H.L. Mencken claimed the nickname could be traced to Continental Army soldiers who kept the piping on their uniforms white through the application of clay. When the troops got rained on the clay on their uniforms turned into “doughy blobs,” supposedly leading to the doughboy moniker. This term was used often until the 1940’s The case measures as follows: From 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock it measures 30.50 MM From 12 o’clock to 6 ‘clock it measures 30.70 MM From 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock with crown it measures 34.50 MM (gotta love the oversized crown) The power plant is a 15 jewel (high caliber than most back them). It was made is 1929. That year only 5,000 were made. Notice the fine demaskeening on the movement. Usually an indication of more time spent on the movement production. In horology, damaskeening is decorative patterning on a watch movement. The term damaskeening is used in America, while in Europe the terms used are Fausses Côtes, Côtes de Genève or Geneva Stripes. Such patterns are made from very fine scratches made by rose engine lathe using small disks, polishing wheels or ivory laps.
