Piaget’s revolutionary philosophy took an entirely different approach to society’s perception of the conventional wristwatch design to place focus on producing wristwatch concepts which took advantage of their master gem setting skills to produce bracelet watches which were considered more as a piece of jewelry as a bracelet than that of the typical wristwatch concept which was traditionally more focused on accuracy and function. As demonstrated by the present example, Piaget combined their already established master gem setting skills as a jeweler with a newly innovated technology to engineer one of the world’s most ultra-thin smallest movements of the period. As a result, this innovation enabled Piaget’s creations to stand out from all other examples in their period because they had the unique dual master skill sets in both gem setting and watchmaking which most watch manufacturers and jewelry houses did not, allowing their firm to produce the some of the periods most eye catching and creative concepts. During this period there was a newfound shift in society which empowered women as a result of their role in the world wars and gave way as inspiration to the leading design firms to commission new design concepts to be commissioned and specially ordered by female royalty, world leaders and celebrities alike such as Elizabeth Taylor or Jackie Kennedy in this period by this firm who would reach out to Piaget for a new demand of a different style of bracelet watch than ever seen before. Additionally, because it was also considered rude for women to check the time in the company of others while at events, leading design firms produced especially unique and beautiful concepts such as the present example which is designed with channel set step cut diamonds, marquis cut stones and brilliant round cut diamonds to appear more so as a tennis bracelet that that of a wristwatch at first glance by onlookers, but with a very unique twist on design of the period that also upheld the highest standards of design and innovation technology in both gem set skills and watchmaking technology in the period. The present Diamond “Sun Spray” Motif Tennis Style Bracelet watch embodies this unique dual design element where master watchmaking and master gem setting intersected as the present example is noticeably different from other ordinary tennis bracelet watches of previous periods that were commonly produced with only the most common brilliant round cut diamond design since it was not only more cost effective, but also an easier stone to source, match, cut and design with than the present example which required much more additional attention to detail in all aspects. Instead, as designed on the present example- which is Instantly different at first glance than other period designs because it is not only more sleek in nature, but also it is designed with 3 different stone cuts which at this time was considered extremely difficult, costly and timely to commission and also as a result more desirable since more rare as master jewelers were required to pay extra special attention to each stone’s source, size, matching and also to plan ahead with micro measurements since the technology was so limited back then in both skill sets that Piaget was the leader of. The key design element of the present timepiece is its bezel which is designed with a diamond set Sun Spray Motif and is extra unique for multiple reasons as the firm’s design concept is set with diamond stones around the dial which are channel set and with Step Cut Baguettes diamonds to produce a very dramatic and unique hall of mirrors effect that was not only a very rarely executed stone type and design for tennis bracelet watches, but also extremely difficult for master gem setters to work with in general to cut as is cut to produce an extra dramatic hologram like effect when interacting with sunlight. Generally, Step cut baguette diamonds are especially unique from other diamond cuts at first observation. They were originally introduced in the Art Deco Period and largely appreciated as being different than that of the more conventional diamond stone types which society was used to as they were characterized by their geometric forms and clean lines which the 1920s were best known for. Because of the stones physical make up, they produce what is known as a hall-of-mirrors effect when cut correctly, which is a larger, and more prismatic reflection that creates flashes of light as it reacts to sunlight. These flashes of light complement the dark planes of each step which are produced as a result of how they are cut, so it is noticeably not your typical diamond by any means when implemented in designs. Instead, their cut produces a uniquely identifiable flat, crystal-clear ice look rather than a frosty flare which was more common with brilliant round cut diamonds since one can see through the step cuts more clearly making it also appear like a diamond that is in its most rare form as well. This special effect is driven by the fact that step cut diamonds are sharper with more pronounced edges than other diamonds and create a distinct rectangle shape with larger facets that draw attention to the center of the stone and cause light to reflect in a more distinct, hologram-like way than any other diamond cut known. Furthermore, unlike other diamonds, this effect comes from the fact that step cuts have a 5-to-1 ratio of length to width, so they have large straight facets arranged in parallel lines on all four sides to draw the viewer’s specifically to the attention to the center of the stone reminiscent of the steps of an Aztec temple or pyramid, hence its nickname as a step cut. In addition, the difficulty in cutting this stone cut is especially difficult because there are also less facets for diamond cutters to work with since they only have 14 facets whereas brilliant round cut diamonds typically have well over 50 usually, so overall it is extremely difficult to cut this stone type and much less room for an error by the gem setter when placing facets so it makes every cut requiring more precision to be perfect since essentially one wrong cut would ruin the stone and the piece as a whole… another reason why so many people believe only the highest quality examples make it onto highest end jewelry as a result. Additionally, the present timepiece concept is further accented by two marquis cut diamonds on either side of the dial which meet the platinum diamond set bracelet that is completely set with the brilliant round cut diamonds making the timepiece extremely versatile in nature and high fashion as it can be easily worn with other pieces of jewelry given its various cuts as well as timeless in nature since its main stone are also highly celebrated as the step cut diamonds many jewelers consider it to be the jewelers stone cut of the past present and future natural making sense why such a design would further be executed in platinum which is a metal type generally reserved for only the most important clients and premier creations. Also interesting to note eventually overtime Piaget’s all-diamond set creations were limited in production with only a few created in the earlier years as the firm moved towards larger mass production design concepts with hardstone dials in lapis , tiger eye and jade amongst other exotic dial materials and mostly in white or yellow gold bracelet and bangle bracelets watches as they became ever more famous into the 1970s so as a result it made earlier all diamond examples such as the present example that much more unique, beautiful and limited given the extra special attention to detail and workmanship. In 1874, at age 19, Georges-Édouard Piaget (1855–1931) began manufacturing handmade timepiece components and movements in a workshop on his family farm in La Côte-aux-Fées, Switzerland. The company expanded into luxury wristwatches and pocket watches under the direction of Georges-Édouard’s son, Timothée Piaget. Later, Timothée’s sons, Gérald and Valentin Piaget, would lead a team of talented craftspeople into a new era of innovation for the brand in both watches and luxury jewelry.

The Piaget family name was trademarked in 1943 and a large manufacturing facility was established in La Côte-aux-Fées. There they would perfect one of their signatures: ultra-thin movements. Valentin urged his design team to “do what has never been done before.”

In 1959, the Salon Piaget was opened in Geneva, where Piaget also set up workshops for goldsmithing and gem setting, introducing the company’s inaugural jewelry creations and establishing a creative hub where artisans were encouraged to push the boundaries of their designs. In 1963, Piaget released its first collection of watches with ornamental stones set into their dials (the brand's stone-dial watches are undeniable classics of watchmaking).

These artful creations caught the eye of such storied tastemakers as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Andy Warhol and Sophia Loren. In 1967, Yves Piaget collaborated with Salvador Dalí on a collection with pieces featuring the Dalí d’Or gold medals of the artist and his wife, Gala. Gala would also inspire the 1973 Limelight Gala timepiece and the subsequent collection.

Luxury jewelry designed by the company’s artisans has often cleverly reflected Piaget’s watchmaking origins, like the Possession collection, whose swinging pendants and turning rings nod to the movement of its watches. The Rose and Sunlight collections of bracelets, earrings and necklaces, meanwhile, reflect natural themes with a bit of Art Deco style. Piaget’s watches, likewise, have embodied an inventive approach to design, such as the Piaget Polo watch, which was introduced in 1979, popular for its luxurious refinement and widely imitated in the 1980s.

In 2001, the Piaget Haute Horlogerie was opened outside of Geneva, a facility that advanced its work in watchmaking and jewelry. The Swiss luxury watchmaker and jeweler now operates as part of the Richemont Group.
