A Dirty Dozen WWII Military wristwatch, available now at our Showroom, London.
This remarkable timepiece features a black dial with Arabic numbers, minute markers around the edge of the dial, a small seconds display at 6 0’clock and an upwards arrow, known as a Pheon, just under the number 12. The robust 38mm case features a broad stainless steel bezel and a larger than usual crown with a coin-edge finish.
The screw-down case back features a number of engravings. These consist of the Pheon arrow to ascertain that the watch was issued by the government, a military serial number which is preceded with a capital letter and indicates the military store number, a civilian serial number which would be the manufacturers standard serial number, and the initials W.W.W which stand for “Watch. Wrist. Waterproof”. The existence and visibility of these engravings confirm and authenticate that the timepiece was an original “dirty dozen” piece issued by the MOD to the British soldiers, during WWII.
Fitted with a generic green NATO strap, a generic steel pin buckle, and powered by a manual winding movement, this remarkable timepiece is the perfect example of wartime horology, and although the time-keeping is not perfect, it is still highly collectible and a wonderful additional to a watch enthusiasts collection.
The nickname “Dirty Dozen” derives from the 1960s fictional film based on 12 soldiers during WWII. It is also a nod to the 12 brands which Britains Ministry of Defence asked to make these watch. These brands were; Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, jaeger LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record, Timor and Vertex. The watches were to be issued to British soldiers in the Military, and the MOD’s requirements were that these watches were made to be reliable, accurate and durable.
