14 karat solid yellow gold Cyma “Hermetic Trench watch with Swing Lugs, that is what you are seeing. In my world of watch collecting, restoration and refinishing, the word “Rare” is often thrown out without any regard to the watch. It is often overused to attract attention from new collectors who really don’t know any better as they are new the vintage watch arena. What I have here is remarkable. It is a true “Hermetic Trench Watch” The watch case is a hermetic or double case. This was invented, by watch case maker of Longeau, Berne, Switzerland, who was granted Swiss patent number CH 89276 in January 1921 for a " Montre à remontoire avec boitier protecteur" literally "a watch with a protective box". Look at pictures with the crown well within the case, this is where the crown nestles into the case securely The purpose of the design was to overcome the problem of sealing the case where the stem enters. Cases with screw backs and screw bezels that sealed the case joints against water had existed for a long time, but there was no fully satisfactory way of sealing the hole where the stem, which allowed the watch to be wound and set by the crown, entered the case. The fully cased watch, including its crown, was placed inside a second larger outer case which had no crown, and therefore no hole for the stem. The outer case had a screw on bezel that formed a hermetic seal, totally protecting the watch within. That’s what I am offering; I am dating this watch to pre-1920, what is special is the combination of solid gold, swing lugs, enamel dial, totally restored! Let’s get a better understanding: What is a “Trench Watch” What were Trench watches? They were created often using small pocket watch movements and installing into watch cases that were meant to worn on the wrist. They often have some of the following characteristics: Fixed or Wire Lug: No traditional spring bar attachment as found in today’s watches. For more practical purposes, a special alloy was developed which went by several different names, such as, "Silveroid, Silverore, Silverode or Silverine. "Silveroid" appears to have become the standard name for this metal that consisted of 45% nickel, 54% copper and 1% manganese. This metal was fairly hard wearing and could withstand the rigors of everyday use, for instance on the Railroad Case Manufactures: There were many case manufacturers that made cases for Trench Watches. Some of the more well know were: Fortune, Depollier and Sons, Dennison (English Manufacturer) Illinois (not affiliated with the Illinois Watch Company) Depollier and Sons, Wadsworth, Fahys, Philadelphia, Trusty and many more This style of watch represents the epitome of the Trench Watch ear of timepieces.
