This sleek, 36mm stainless steel mechanical automatic watch is among the finest mechanical watches ever made. You. may be familiar with the name, Seiko. Maybe your mom or dad wore a Seiko; no-nonsense timepieces that would provide decades of reliable service. This is a Seiko, but it's a Grand Seiko and the "Grand" is everything. First created in 1960 to compete with the iconic Swiss watchmakers, every component of the Grand Seiko was built entirely in-house: from the crystal to the steel. Each was hand-assembled and hand-polished with microscopic attention to detail. When I bought this Grand Seiko in around 2009, Grand Seiko stores didn't exist in the United States. You had to buy the watches in Japan or online from a Japanese store that would ship to America. I first learned of Grand Seiko as a child, from my uncle Mercer who served in the navy and brought a Grand Seiko back with him. This model, number SBGR001 features the 9S55 movement; Seiko's finest mechanical movement until they released an updated version in 2010. This watch is accurate to within 2 to 3 seconds per day and because it has a hacking function (when you pull the crown all the way out, the movement seizes), you can be super OCD and set the watch to the second. This watch may not be flashy but neither is it boring. It is a supremely well-built. Over the years, I have owned just about every Rolex worth owning and none has impressed me as much as a fine Grand Seiko. The workmanship on this watch is next-level, from the beveled hands (hand-polished) to the beautiful little frame that presents the date at the 3 o'clock position. Even the face of the watch, which at first glance might seem to be a unified silver is not: it has a subtle machined texture, almost like photons radiating out from a central spot. The result is that this face looks beautiful as you move your hand. The way light slides across the dial; it's a jewel. Speaking of jewel: this is a 26 jewel watch that, while it doesn't have a screw-down winding stem is nonetheless water-resistant down to 10 bars (or 100 meters). I love the 36mm size and it's completely unisex. I also love that it's stealth: to the untrained eye, it's just a Seiko. But to somebody who knows, it's like you're automatically in the club. The watch ships with its certificate of authenticity, stating the serial number, caliber number, movement serial number, and case serial number, all handsomely presented in a deep navy blue portfolio. The original box is no more. While this isn't a brand-new watch, it's lightly worn and in excellent condition. I wore it on one of my book tours and I'm sure there are photos of me wearing the watch if you care about such things. For understated elegance with unparalleled workmanship, Grand Seiko it must be.
