A high point of Patek’s design era
The Ellipse was never an entry-level Patek. When it was introduced, it sat at the very top of the brand’s catalog, priced as a luxury object first and a wristwatch second. Produced in comparatively small numbers and executed almost exclusively in precious metals, the Ellipse represented a moment when Patek leaned fully into design, proportion, and elegance rather than complication.
This example captures that intent clearly, with a slim white gold case and a deep blue sunburst dial that immediately signals where it sat in the hierarchy when new.
Why this reference carries weight (pun intended)
The blue sunburst dial is the defining feature. Saturated but restrained, it shifts subtly with the light and pairs naturally with the cool tone of the white gold case. The elliptical proportions are exactly what made the model so distinctive in the 1970s and early 1980s, elegant, unconventional, and unmistakably Patek.
Today, they remain undervalued relative to where they once sat, especially in clean examples like this.
