About the Item

This is a possibly unique conversion of a vintage Movado travel clock/ purse clock into a bangle wristwatch. We date manufacture of this wonderful art deco timepiece to c. 1925. Made by Movado Factories (Movado), in 935 silver , case stamped as Pat Pending, the case slides open to reveal the clock, which is powered by a Manually wound 17 jewel movement. The dial is signed Udall and Ballou. Udall Ballou were a leading jeweller headquartered on 5th Avenue New York (from 1888-1949). They directly competed against Tiffany co and Cartier to attract the preeminent New Yorkers, known for being avantgarde, embracing fashion and are considered to have peak following during the Roaring Twenties, when this timepiece was created. Movado was, in period, one of the leading lights in watchmaking, allowing its pieces to be signed by the best jewellers in town, U&B, Tiffany and Cartier included. The bracelet is later , bespoke, hallmarked silver 925 (lion passant) and fitted to the clock. Given the slide opening of the clock, it may easily accommodated a larger wrist than when closed, which is for a wrist c.155mm. Total weight, 80.99g. Please note there is reflection of our photographer's camera in some images, this is not a stain or damage to the case, we do not edit photographs.

Movado is a Swiss watchmaking company founded in 1881 by Achilles Ditesheim in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The name "Movado" means "always in motion" in Esperanto, and the company has lived up to its name throughout its history with its commitment to innovation and design. In 1912, Movado introduced its first wristwatch, the Ermeto, which was marketed as a travel watch with a stylish and protective case. The Ermeto was a huge success, and it helped to establish Movado as a leader in the wristwatch market. In the 1920s and 1930s, Movado continued to innovate with new designs and technologies. In 1930, the company introduced its iconic Museum Watch, which features a simple, minimalist design with a single dot at 12 o'clock. The Museum Watch was designed by Nathan George Horwitt, a young American designer who was inspired by the Bauhaus movement. The Museum Watch was an immediate success, and it is still one of Movado's most popular watches...
