Lady in Red
By Daniel Oguche Junior
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
The title, "Lady in Red," sets the tone for the artwork, drawing attention to the woman's commanding presence. Red is a color often associated with passion, power, and sensuality, and in this context, it symbolizes the woman's self-assurance and poise. Her choice of attire reflects her unapologetic embrace of femininity and her willingness to stand out with grace and charm. The sophisticated hairstyle of the young woman is a captivating element of the artwork. It showcases the artist's attention to detail and skill in portraying intricate features. The hairstyle's complexity symbolizes the complexity of the woman herself – a multi-faceted individual with dreams, aspirations, and a unique personality that shines through her every glance. In "Lady in Red," Daniel Oguche...

Adventure Story 1
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Adventure Story" is a homage to the rich cultural traditions passed down through generations. The artwork's protagonist, a male hunter, stands as a representation of the deep-rooted connection between man and nature, as well as the preservation of traditional practices. The wooden local gun he carries symbolizes both the tools of his trade and the ancestral knowledge that has been handed down through time. Bello's artwork prompts us to appreciate the importance of preserving and honoring our cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder that our traditions, rituals, and stories hold invaluable wisdom and provide a link to our past, helping us understand who we are as individuals and as a collective. The central theme of "Adventure Story" revolves around the spirit of adventure, encapsulated by the hunter in the artwork. The headlamp tied around his head signifies his readiness to explore the unknown and face the challenges that lie ahead. It speaks of the courage to navigate unfamiliar territories and the determination to embrace new experiences. The headlamp, traditionally used to illuminate darkness, can also be interpreted metaphorically as a beacon of knowledge and enlightenment. It symbolizes the hunter's quest for wisdom and understanding, highlighting the importance of seeking knowledge as we venture into the uncharted territories of life. Olamilekan Bello...

Blue Towel 1
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
"Blue Towel" is an artistic composition that demands our attention. The woman wrapped in the titular blue towel stands as a metaphor for the delicate nature of the human condition. The choice of a towel, an item commonly associated with comfort, adds a layer of paradox, suggesting that beneath the surface, vulnerability and uncertainty may reside. The color blue further amplifies the artwork's emotive power. Blue, often associated with tranquility, introspection, and depth, offers a subtle insight into the subject's state of mind. It prompts us to consider the significance of self-reflection and the search for personal meaning that lies beneath the facade we present to the world. Bello's "Blue Towel" invites viewers to delve into the multifaceted nature of vulnerability and identity. The woman's posture and gaze suggest introspection as if she is immersed in deep thought, grappling with the layers that make up her sense of self. The vulnerability expressed in her body language encourages us to reflect on our own journeys of self-discovery and the masks we wear to shield our vulnerabilities from the world. The blue towel enveloping the lady can also be interpreted as a symbolic cocoon, representing a transformative stage in her life. It alludes to the moments of introspection and self-exploration that are essential for personal growth and understanding. Just as a caterpillar retreats into a cocoon before emerging as a butterfly, the woman in the artwork may be undergoing her own metamorphosis. Olamilekan Bello...

"My Lady" is a testament to the artist's admiration for the beauty that women possess in their unique forms. Oyindamola skillfully captures the essence of femininity through the lady's enchanting smile, which radiates joy and confidence. This portrayal challenges society's narrow definitions of beauty, reminding us that every woman, regardless of societal standards, possesses an innate beauty that should be recognized and celebrated. Through "My Lady," Oyindamola emphasizes the crucial need to respect and appreciate all women. The artwork stands as a visual proclamation, demanding that society view women not as objects to be scrutinized or judged but as individuals deserving of dignity and admiration. By depicting the lady with a smile on her face, the artist reminds us that every woman deserves to be seen and treated with respect, acknowledging her inherent worth beyond physical appearances. In "My Lady," Oyindamola captures a sense of empowerment and self-love that every woman should embrace. The lady's radiant smile symbolizes her self-assuredness and acceptance of her own beauty. By presenting this image, the artist encourages women to recognize their own worth and appreciate their individuality. The artwork serves as a reminder that self-love is the foundation for demanding respect and appreciation from others. "My Lady" challenges the stereotypes and societal norms that often diminish the value and potential of women. Oyindamola's artwork sparks a dialogue about gender equality, urging viewers to reflect on the importance of dismantling the barriers that prevent women from fully expressing themselves and realizing their dreams. By portraying the lady as a strong and confident figure, the artist invites us to redefine our perceptions of women and advocate for their empowerment. Through "My Lady," Oyindamola underscores the importance of unity and inclusivity in championing the rights and recognition of all women. The artwork emphasizes that beauty comes in diverse forms and that every woman, regardless of race, age, or background, should be valued and respected. The lady's smile and the necklace she wears become symbols of unity, reminding us of the strength and beauty that arise from embracing diversity. Oyewumi...

Idia
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Idia (Iyoba) was the mother of Esigie, the Oba of Benin who ruled from 1504 to 1550. She played a significant role in the rise and reign of her son, being described as a great warrior who fought relentlessly before and during her son's reign as the Oba (king) of the Edo people. Queen Idia was instrumental in securing the title of Oba for her son Esigie following the death of his father Oba Ozolua. To that end, she raised an army to fight off his brother Arhuaran who was supposed to be the Oba by right and tradition but was subsequently defeated in battle. Esigie’s mother became the 17th Oba of Benin. Esigie instituted the title of iyoba (queen mother) and conferred it on his mother, along with Eguae-Iyoba (Palace of the Queen Mother). —Wikipedia She's the epitome of courage, vision, strength, and vigor. In this Becoming series, I hope to revive our heritage as well as examine the intricacies of self-actualization, vis-a-vis drawing inspiration from the African history from the Benin and Esan perspective, contemporarily. Unlikely Event 5 (The Soothsayer)
By Ajegbomogun Damilola
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Can we please lay out the tables now? Can we allow the days? Once more permit the rivers and oceans to lie in their beds? May I close my eyes and reach out, breathing normally again, certain that the sky is filled with birds, and that you will remain? Or shall we send me back into the grey-blue chambers of disconnection and hollow ambition? A strange card to the wail of the unseen host, somewhere in Africa across the fields, turning over an unfortunate card and laying them slickly in the firelight, winking in such dark, knowing eyes. I was passing at some distance, circled and charmed to all ends, painting the figure in place of any other kind of sustenance, yet distracted and possessed by one who would undoubtedly deny it. Girl from Gombe
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Girl from Gombe is an original painting by Abifola Olorunlana. Olorunlana created Girl from Gombe with Acrylic on a 36W by 48H inches primed canvas. The Girl from Gombe is a two-portrait series about a young girl from Gombe who is trying to find balance in her personal life in a society that does not really care much about the mental health of young people. In each portrait, her bodily pose, complemented with fresh-looking green plants and every other element in the painting tells a story about all the good and bad choices that have led her to where she is; the influence of her academics, family, religion, and the friends she surrounds herself with. While she's fighting her insecurities, and facing a dilemma in her career choice, she seems to persevere in living. Whenever I look at my subject and listen to her talk, all I see is a beautiful girl who has fallen prey to what we all refer to as life: Abifola Olorunlana decided to narrate with paint on canvas as a reminder that no matter what the situation is, as long as we are alive our lives can always get better. Portrait of Theophilus
Located in Ibadan, Oyo
Ganiyat Abdulazeez, a contemporary Nigerian artist, has created many notable works of art that capture the beauty and complexity of the human form. Among her most striking pieces is "Portrait of Theophilus," a painting that captures the essence of a man with a cap, who exudes both confidence and vulnerability. The portrait is executed in a style that is typical of Abdulazeez's work, featuring bold and vivid colors that are applied with loose, impressionistic brushstrokes. The colors in the painting are warm and earthy, with a predominantly brown and pink, and red color scheme that creates a sense of warmth and intimacy. The subject of the painting, Theophilus, is a young man with a cap that partially obscures his face. His expression is one of quiet contemplation, with a hint of a smile on his lips that suggests a sense of humor and lightness of spirit. The pose of the figure is relaxed, with his head tilted slightly to the side and his shoulders hunched forward, creating a sense of intimacy and vulnerability. What sets "Portrait of Theophilus" apart from other portraits is its emotional depth. The figure's relaxed pose and warm color scheme create a sense of intimacy that invites the viewer to connect with the subject on a personal level. The viewer is drawn into the painting, invited to consider the complexities and contradictions that exist within the figure's inner world. The painting is also notable for its simplicity. The figure is depicted against a background, with no distracting elements or contextual details to distract from the essence of the figure. This minimalist approach allows the viewer to focus on the details of the subject's expression, posture, and clothing, all of which contribute to the overall impression of the figure. Overall, "Portrait of Theophilus" is a masterful work of art that captures the essence of a man with a cap in all his complexity and vulnerability. It is a testament to Ganiyat's skill as an artist, and to her ability to create paintings that are both aesthetically pleasing and emotionally resonant. Whether viewed as a portrait or as a study of the human form, this painting is sure to leave a lasting impression on those who see it. Shipping Procedure Ships in a well-protected tube from Nigeria This work is unique, not a print or other type of copy.
