Kaneshige Toyo National Treasure Signed Japanese Bizen Pottery Sake Bottle Vase
Located in Studio City, CA
A beautiful, perfectly shaped and balanced antique Bizen ware shibui sake bottle (tokkuri) vase by renowned Japanese master potter/artist Kaneshige Toyo (1896-1967) featuring a unique natural, wonderfully textured organic forming ash glaze. Kaneshige is universally considered to be the founder of modern Bizen pottery.
In 1956, Kaneshige was certified as a Living National Treasure (Important Intangible Cultural Heritage) for his work in Bizen Ware pottery/ceramics. Bizen Ware is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally from the Bizen province, presently a part of the Okayama prefecture. It is considered one of the Six Ancient Japanese Kilns (along with Echizen ware, Seto ware, Shigaraki ware, Tamba ware, and Tokoname ware).
The piece is signed/ sealed on the base with one of Kaneshige's traditional incised marks.
A rather striking and engaging work. One of the best Kaneshige works we have come across. Scarce and hard to find in such an excellent condition. Would be a fantastic addition to any Japanese/Asian pottery or Bizen Ware collection or eye-catching stand-alone work in about any setting.
Kaneshige's work can be found in numerous prominent collections and museums including:
Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum, Seto, Japan
Brooklyn Museum, NY
Hagi Uragami Museum, Yamaguchi, Japan
Honolulu Art Museum, HI
Ibaraki Ceramic Art Museum, Kasama, Japan
Indiana Art...

Grey Cased Glass Bottle in the Empoli Style, Poss 1980s
By Vetrerie di Empoli
Located in Melbourne, AU
A cased glass ball-stoppered bottle in Empoli* glass. The light Grey glass graduates in thickness which give a very pleasing Ombre colour effect.
It's in very good condition and while it is not the largest size we've seen, it is still generous - it holds five litres or 1.32 gallons.
The sturdy neck and indented base will certainly support the lifting, tilting and pouring of a large quantity of liquid. There are some speckles of dark colour, possibly ash motts from production, on the inside base. These are embedded in the glass and are not going anywhere.
If you're sticking to strictly decorative use, this beautiful bulbous vessel plays very nicely with other Empoli glass, as you can see in our images.
Note that only the Grey glass bottle is for sale in this listing. The other items in these images are either sold, or you will find them in our shopfront.
*We have no documentary confirmation of the maker but this bottle is in the style of Empoli and is made in that heavy quality cased glass we would expect from the glassmakers of Empoli. It doesn't have quite the refined shape of 1960s Empoli glass so we assume it's from the 1970s, 80s or thereabouts.
In any case, a nice addition to a collection of Empoli glass, a lovely shape and suited to 1960s/70s interiors...
