Bright Light / oil painting on panel, eucalyptus leaves - abstract realism
By Stephanie Peek
Located in Burlingame, CA
'Bright Light' from Stephanie Peek, who makes her home in California, is beautifully rendered with a sense of depth, intellect, timelessness, and mystery. An elegant painting referencing dried eucalyptus leaves that the artist piled up in her studio and studied under a variety of natural and man-made lighting arrangements, as well as at various times of day and night. Oil on panel with natural alabaster ground into the pigments. The painting celebrates natures abstract qualities with a realist's approach. Peek has floated tulips, roses and other flowers and leaves from 17th century still life paintings through the dark smoky atmosphere of her paintings of night...

The White Church, Rumford Center, Oil Painting
By Doug Cosbie
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Doug says of this pastoral American landscape, "On Highway 2 along the Androscoggin River in Maine is the village of Rumford Center, where there is a small United Church. Its simple design and white facade are an iconic symbol of 19th century America. The church hasn't changed over the years, but the surroundings have. This painting is how I perceive the church and things were back in the simpler times when agriculture was the primary livelihood of its parishioners."

Rock in Open Sea
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Rock in Open Sea" 1964, is an oil painting on canvas board by Italian/American artist Xavier Barile, 1891-1981. It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. Also signed, dated, and titled on the back. The canvas board size is 12 x 16 inches, framed size is 15.25 x 19.25 inches. Framed in original wooden gold and red frame. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Xavier J Barile was a Social Realist painter, teacher, lecturer, graphic artist, and writer. He was born March 18, 1891, in Tufo, Italy. His love of beauty manifested itself at a very early age. During his early teens, he used to design monograms for the young girls of his home town, Tufo, Italy, to embroider on their most precious possession, their hope chest and trousseau. In 1907, his mother brought him, his two younger brothers and two sisters to New York, to join their father who had been in New York for several years, preparing the way. He quickly learned English and spent some time helping his father, who was earning a living for the family as a tailor. Having learned English well, Barile then enrolled in the Evening Art Classes at Cooper Union Institute in New York. In due course he enrolled in the Art Students League, New York City. Here he came under the influence of John Sloan, Reginald Marsh and Victor Perard as teachers and George Luks, Robert Henri and Everett Shinn of "the Eight" as friends and colleagues. In 1939 John Sloan dedicated his book, Gist of Art as follows, "To my old friend, first monitor of my first class at the Art Students League 1914." This friendship and mutual regard lasted until Sloan's death in 1951. Of course, it was only natural that Barile should be a part of the "Ashcan School," painting the New York Scene. During this time that he was on his own he worked with all mediums - oil, watercolor, pastel, casein, charcoal, etc. - and he did some fine work with monotypes. It was during these years, the 20's and 30's, that he began to exhibit in such places as the Whitney Studio Club (forerunner of the Whitney Museum of American Art), The Kit Kat Club, The Anderson Gallery, The Cincinnati Museum, The New Mexico Museum, National Society of Painters in Casein, The Salmagundi Club and many other exhibits throughout the United States. He is currently represented in The National Collection of Fine Arts (NCFA) Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. In the mid 30's, like many another struggling artist, XJB worked on the WPA Art Project. One of the murals he worked on is in the U.S. Customs House, Bowling Green, N.Y.C. In this project he collaborated with Reginald Marsh who was the supervisor of this phase of the work. The years until 1939 were spent working in all parts of the United States and in conducting his own classes for aspiring artists. In 1939, on the recommendation of John Sloan, he became the founder, first teacher and Chairman of The Department of Fine Arts, Pueblo Junior College, Pueblo Colorado...

Yellowstone with Lock and Key, Original Painting
By Candice Eisenfeld
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Candice was deeply inspired after a visit to Yellowstone National Park. The central landscape image was created using a photographic transfer method while the landscapes on either side were created with paint applications. "The abstracted compositional areas serve as windows or doors to memories, to secrets, to hidden worlds," Candice says.

Trees In Winter, Oil Painting
By Valerie Berkely
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
I used my finger tips to apply many layers of translucent cool colors in oil and wax. There is a softly calm feeling to the quiet distance of the winter trees in the background while one sturdy pine comes forth. Hints of apricot and lavender glow from beneath misty layers. My choice in this color palette lends itself to any season's decor, inspired by Wolf Kahn. The edges of this piece are natural wood. This piece is wired to hang.

About the Artist
Valerie Berkely uses her finger tips as brushes to create her abstract paintings. For Valerie, the art is all about the process, the paint, her mood, and the moment. She admires the artist Wolf Kahn, who once said, “the picture is the conclusion of an experiment in which the hint of an image becomes actuality." Like Kahn, Valerie’s paintings combine pictorial landscapes with painterly abstraction. The vibrant primary colors capture the hues of the sun rising and setting, and the texture of her fingers across the surface divides sea, land, and sky. There is something very dreamy about these works, exemplified by their color, texture, and atmospheric quality. Valerie’s first “art epiphany” was seeing Seurat's La Grande Jatte at the Art Institute of Chicago. “Bowled me over! I actually fell down. And I knew I was to become a painter.”

Words that describe this painting: Impressionism, Wolf Kahn, transparent, translucent, layers, abstract landscape, oil, wax, finger painting, impressionism, landscape, representational, oil painting, purple

Coastal Landscape
By Irina Belotelkin Roublon
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "Coastal Landscape" c.1970 is a oil painting on canvas by Russian artist Irina Belotelkin Roublon 1913-2009. It is signed lower left by the artist. The canvas size is 18 x 24 inches. It is in very good condition. About the artist. Irina Belotelkin Roublon, née Roudakoff, was born in Elisavetgrad, Ukraine to the Russian noblesse ancienne, descendant of Catherine the Great, she was a student at the Mariinsky Noble Ladies' Institute , Novocherkassk, Russia. She was orphaned at the time of the Russian Civil War after her father, General Paul Roudakoff, was fatally wounded in battle; 5 days later her mother died of typhus. Still unaware of her parents' death, and after witnessing her two sisters' deaths from starvation, the young Irina, then 8 years old, made her way over 1,000 kilometers, alone and through many privations to Moscow and the Estonian embassy there, with whom her Estonian uncle Volodya Blonsky had made arrangements. After a year in Moscow, and appeals to the Estonian consul, Irina was aided in a dramatic escape from the Soviet Union, to her aunt Anna Blonsky Lassburg (1882–1940) and her husband Doctor Genrick Lassburg in Tallinn, Estonia.
